The Little Lagoon Preservation Society will host its quarterly meeting Oct. 15 at the Gulf Shores Activity Center, 260 Clubhouse Drive, with a focus on mariculture operations and fishery trends in Little Lagoon.
The meeting will feature presentations from Maxwell Westendorf and Chase Katechis, biologists with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Marine Resources Division.
Westendorf, a Biologist III and hatchery manager at the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center in Gulf Shores, will provide an overview of operations and species production at the center. His presentation will cover the raising of red drum, Florida pompano, southern flounder and spotted seatrout for sport fish restoration in Alabama’s coastal waters, including Little Lagoon.
Katechis, a Biologist II with the Marine Resources Division’s Mobile office, will discuss the agency’s trawl survey and gillnet sampling programs. His presentation will include an update on the latest trends in species populations in Little Lagoon and surrounding waters.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments and an opportunity for conversation. Speakers will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session.
The meeting also will be available through Zoom. Details will be posted on the Little Lagoon Preservation Society’s Facebook page.
The society encourages those interested in protecting Little Lagoon to become members and volunteer for upcoming projects.
