LILLIAN, Alabama — Sixty three members and guests attended this first meeting of 2012 when the Lillian Women’s Club met on Jan. 17.  The very successful Christmas Home Tour chaired by Char Kuhr was celebrated by having owners of all the homes as guests of the club. Millie Freeze, Harriet Suarez, Becky Wiggins, Jeanne Baxter, Sara Manning, and Duetta Zabo attended, In appreciation, they were presented with gift certificates to the Lillian Café. A record-setting 261 tickets were sold for the tour. Monies will benefit the Lillian Perdido Bay Library, the Lillian Recreational Park, and the Lillian Fire Department.

Doris Green catered the luncheon serving delicious Beef tips over rice, salad, and dessert.

Stacy Davis, owner and pharmacist at the Lillian Pharmacy presented a very interesting and informative program entitled “Over the Counter and Prescription Medications.” She presented some astonishing points to ponder: 1.5 million people make medical errors each year, 700,000 suffer unintentional overdose each year and in some cases, early onset of dementia may be caused by being over medicated.

To avoid these types of problems Ms. Davis recommends the following: Be sure to keep the Doctor/Pharmacist informed of all medications, both over the counter and prescribed medications one is taking. The result of taking common over the counter medication such as Tylenol can cause serious side effects if taken with certain prescribed meds.  Carefully, read the labels on all medications and take as prescribed.  Never borrow medication from friends. Davis described a program that is available for persons living alone who cannot remember to take medications timely. Calls can be made to the home to remind the recipient.  Also, Lillian Pharmacy has a free program to dispose of medications no longer needed. Disposing of unused meds can help to eliminate the chance of error.  The pharmacy is always eager to answer customer questions regarding their medications.

Center pieces made with fresh vegetables and “pill bottles” with humorous labels and candy “pills” served as table decorations furnished by Pat Brantley, Joyce Taylor, and Joyce Sheldon.

Door prizes were won by Donna Walter, Wanda Hook, and Sheila Roberts.  Janet Blair won the 50/50 and donated her winnings to the Library.
