Lightning believed to be cause of Alabama 225 fire

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—State forestry officials and local fire-rescue units responded to an early-morning fire in a wooded area of Alabama Highway 225, near Historic Blakeley State Park July 8.

The confirmed cause of the fire and extent of the damage was not immediately available, but Stanley Anderson with the Alabama Forestry Commission said the blaze is believed to have been sparked by lightning.

State forestry crews also continue to battle a brush fire in Lillian near the Alabama-Florida line, Anderson said, that burned at least 100 acres of the Alabama Department Conservation and Natural Resources’ Forever Wild property on July 7. The Lillian fire is also believed to have been caused by a lightning strike.

Assistant Fire Chief Troy Dyess said Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue has not responded to a brush fire in the Blakeley area, but did work a seven-acre brush fire off of Jenkins Pit Road late July 7.

“The fire is under control with a good fire break around the perimeter. Forestry did respond to this location to cut the fire break. We have checked the fire multiple times today and see no further spread of fire or immediate risk of fire crossing the fire break,” Dyess said.
