Howard J. Leverence, 88, of Elberta, died Friday, May 9, 2008 in Foley.

He was born Feb. 8, 1920 in Chicago and was a former resident of Michigan and Gulf Shores.

He was a member of Dalton Baptist Church in Twin Lake, Mich., a member of VFW Post 5658 in Elberta and the Combat Infantry Men’s Association.

He served in World War II in the First Cavalry in the Pacific Theater.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Leora Leverence of Elberta; three daughters, Anita McNutt of Elberta, Rebecca Balogh of Elberta and Dorcas Leverence of Michigan; son, James Leverence of Oneida, Tenn.; two brothers, Robert Leverence of Michigan and Richard Leverence of Illinois; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by Cason Funeral Service, Foley.
