Legal Services Alabama executive director Guy Lescault announces retirement

Posted

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) has announced the retirement of Executive Director Guy Lescault, who will step down after leading the organization’s efforts to expand access to justice for low-income individuals and families across Alabama since 2018.

Lescault will continue serving in the role through the remainder of 2026 to support a smooth leadership transition as the organization searches for its next executive director, a news release from LSA said.

During his tenure, Lescault guided LSA through the development of innovative programs, strengthened community partnerships, secured critical funding and helped thousands of individuals overcome legal barriers involving housing, domestic violence, consumer protection, public benefits, elder law and other essential civil legal matters.

The LSA Board of Directors expressed appreciation for Lescault’s years of service and contributions to the organization in the release.

Lescault’s legal career has included leadership roles with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association in Washington, D.C., Georgia Legal Services Program in Atlanta, Neighborhood Legal Services Program in Washington, D.C., Massachusetts Justice Project in Springfield, Massachusetts, Senior Citizens Law Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Legal Services Corporation in Washington, D.C. He also served as director of Management Information Exchange.

Representatives from Management Information Exchange, along with LSA and the LSA Board, have begun a comprehensive search for the organization’s next executive director.

The executive director serves as LSA’s chief executive and public leader, overseeing strategic leadership, program excellence, financial sustainability, fundraising, compliance, and community and political relations. The position leads a senior management team and works closely with the 27-member Board of Directors, which includes local attorneys, community representatives eligible for representation and individuals who support access to justice.

Interested applicants can visit www.legalservicesalabama.org/employment-opportunities to learn more about the position and application process. Candidates are encouraged to submit applications by Aug. 14 to receive full consideration.

Legal Services Alabama is the sole federally funded statewide civil legal aid organization in Alabama. The private nonprofit law firm serves low-income families and individuals in all 67 counties. The organization was created in 2004 through the merger of three civil legal aid entities: Legal Services North-Central Alabama, Metro Birmingham Legal Services and Legal Services Corporation of Alabama.

With a 2026 budget of $12 million and approximately 120 staff members, including 65 attorneys, LSA operates eight program offices and a statewide call center that receives more than 120,000 calls each year.

LSA receives 75% of its funding from the federal Legal Services Corporation and 25% from a mix of local, state and federal sources, foundations and individual giving.

In 2025, LSA closed more than 13,000 cases. The organization’s advocates specialize in legal areas that disproportionately affect low-income communities, with practice groups focused on housing, consumer issues, public benefits, elder law and education.
