DAPHNE, Ala. The Bayside Admirals’ 2010 football season ended Friday night at the hands of the Leeds Green Wave by a score of 49-7.
Leeds pounced with 21-second quarter points, and they never looked back as they moved on to the semifinals of the 3A state playoffs.
“We just don’t have the size to match-up,” said Bayside coach Phil Lazenby. “They dominated the line of scrimmage. Leeds is a class program with a class coaching staff.”
The Green Wave compiled 423 yards of rushing and scored all seven touchdowns on the ground.
The Green Wave got on the board on their first possession on a 9-yard run by Running back Ladarius Rodgers.
The Admirals marched down the field on the shoulders of a 39-yard run by running back Jonathan Walton and a 22-yard pass from quarterback Camp Campbell to receiver Geoffrey Steinbaugh, but after two sacks of 8 and 15 yards, they could not convert a long fourth down and turned the ball over.
Bayside went for three more fourth down conversion attempts in the first half, and misfired on all of them as Leeds took control of the game with a 28-0 halftime advantage.
“The wear and tear of our little kids on their big kids took its toll,” Lazenby said. “(Leeds) doesn’t like to be scored on. They have a great defensive program.”
Bayside was led offensively by Walton, who scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:03 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-7.
Walton had 53 yards rushing, while Ryan Owens, Thomas Buchanon and Campbell combined for over 100 yards rushing. Campbell also added 71 yards passing, but threw three interceptions and was sacked five times. Steinbaugh added 53 yards receiving on four receptions in the game.
Dedrick Forsysthe and Rodgers, who combined to score three touchdowns, led the Green Wave rushing attack. Derious Mitchell also added two touchdown runs for Leeds in the fourth quarter.
The 2010 season marked the farthest Bayside has advanced in their 10-year history, reaching the quarterfinals and hosting their first playoff home game in program history.
