Laverne Ada Sterthman Hanft, 81, born Aug. 28, 1929, a resident of Elberta, 81, died Friday, May 27, 2011 at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Belleville, Ill., the daughter of Elmer and Meta Sterthman.
She was an outstanding Navy wife for 58 years to her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Hanft, married Dec. 27, 1952. She was a loving mother to two sons, Jeffrey L. and Scott A. Hanft. She enjoyed doing arts and crafts and playing bridge. It was said, “She never met a stranger.”
She was preceded in death her sons.
Survivors include her husband; brother, Elmer “Sonny” (Carol) Sterthman of O’Fallon, Ill.; nieces, Nancy “Duke” Leslie of Tampa, Fla., Jamie Leslie of Smithton, Ill., Stacey (Brent) Lamb of Lawrence, Kan., Lana Sue (Michael) Bailey of Rowlett, Texas, Carol (Bob) Brown of Bastrop, Texas, and Susan Hanft of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law, William E. Hanft of Bastrop, Texas.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3 at Josephine Baptist Church.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Josephine Baptist Church.
