The new $137 million Gulf Shores High School is set to open this fall, and Gulf Coast Media got another look inside to see the progress they've made since we showed you the building under construction last October. Spread across 90 acres with 28 standard classrooms, 11 collaborative flex spaces and six science labs covering everything from chemistry to marine biology, the new school will be state-of-the-art. There's also a 753-seat performing arts center, a blackbox theater, a music production studio, a video production studio and specialized labs for aviation, biomedical sciences, robotics, culinary arts and finance. Student-athletes will see a major upgrade too, with a brand-new field house, competition gym, weight room, film study theaters and a covered practice facility all on campus. Superintendent Matt Akin said the building was designed around student needs, not just capacity. Every classroom is equipped with cameras, audio and video technology, and many rooms feature retractable walls that open into shared collaborative spaces. The school will open with room for 1,000 students and is expandable to 1,800 as Gulf Shores continues to grow. Though no date is set, the district plans to hold an open house later this summer.
