ELSANOR, Ala. — There were floats, maskers, plenty of throws and a lot of frisky jazz music.
Who cared if skies were threatening and it sprinkled a bit? This was Mardi Gras in Elsanor.
Elsanor Elementary held its second annual Mardi Gras parade behind the school Feb. 13.
Brightly decorated trailers pulled by small tractors and ATVs wended their way around the back of the school as float riders enthusiastically tossed string after string of beads to the crowd consisting of parents, relatives and fellow students.
It was as much fun as anything you’d see in New Orleans. Or Mobile.
The fun was the culmination of a lot of hard work. Members of the parade’s “royal court” were those who raised the most money for planned field trips to Montgomery and New Orleans for fourth and fifth-graders.
Members of the school’s “Pride Club” were responsible for setting up and cleaning up after the parade, and “Project Jubilee” sold refreshments after the parade.
The royal court and Krewe consisted of:
Queen Destiny Contreras, King John Lightsey, Princesses Morgan Petelinski, Hannah Holmes, Alyssa Taylor, Victoria King, Savannah Parra, Magen McCoy, Casey Dunn, and Jordyn Shackelford. Knights were Jake Cross, Bobby Mennicucci, Cody Gilbeau, Christian Harris, Damien Walden, Christian Thornton, and Zaine Perritt. The Krewe was Caroline Harrison, Grace Myrick, Kirsten Holston, Ashley Towler, Caleb Fowler, Haven West, Matthew McCord, Mckenzie Ellison, Austin Quiggins, Melissa Merchant, DianaKay Taylor, Macy Cole, Melissa Taylor, Jessica McCoy, Krista Patterson, Rayni Kirklin, McKenzie Wiggins, Trey Franklin, Morgan Paradis, Mitzi McLain, and Angela Buscaino.
