ROBERTSDALE, Ala.—Brinesha Mason sank two free throws with 6.2 seconds left in regulation to cap a late Daphne rally with a 29-29 tie and send the Lady Trojans into overtime at Class 6A, Area 3 rival Robertsdale Friday night.

The Daphne girls (6-10 overall and 2-1 in Area 3) went on to a 38-35 division win over the 9-9, 1-2 Golden Bears who led by six with just under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. But foul trouble put four starters on the RHS bench in the final 30 seconds and the Trojans capitalized at the free-throw line as Tiera Green and Alexis Jones made shots down the OT stretch. The Bears led 13-7 at the half and 20-17 after three periods.

“We came in with a game plan of pressing hard and being aggressive,” said Daphne head coach Tereance Pinkney. “They (RHS) have a size advantage, so we want to get in their way and force the physical game. I’m really proud of how my girls hung in and never gave up. They could have thrown in the towel but I told them to just stay close and give ourselves a chance and they did. We came on late, but we came on strong.”

Robertsdale head coach Paul Marsh said foul trouble and a lack of depth caught up with his team.

"We don't have the depth to get in foul trouble," said Marsh. "We have to play smart because we're not that deep. I was extremely proud of the effort of my girls tonight though, they fought hard."

For DHS, Mason finished with nine points, Akajah Edwards added eight while Car’Dazja Harthorn and Green added seven each. On the boards the Trojans were led by Victoria Mason with eight rebounds, Harthorn with six and Erin Windham had five. Victoria Mason also had two assists and a pair of steals. Freshman Mykal Johnson intercepted a late pass under the RHS bucket to set up Brinesha Mason’s free throws to tie the game in regulation.

Robertsdale was led by Austin Richardson’s game-high 12 points and Maddy Petite furnished six points for the Bears.

“Tiera Green was big for us tonight handling the basketball,” Pinkney added. “I keep stressing to my players that basketball is a game of runs. We made a run there at the end and we were able to win."
