MOBILE — Faulkner State squandered a 16-point first-half lead, then came back to claim a double-overtime, 58-56 win Monday night over Alabama Community College Conference South Division foe Bishop State in the Shaw High School gymnasium.
Latoya Brown’s 3-point field goal with just over 10 seconds left in the second overtime provided the winning points and gave the Lady Sun Chiefs their second win in a row after losing nine straight. FSCC improved to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in ACCC South Division play. Bishop dropped to 2-11 and 1-4.
Point guard Kala Smith sank a 3-point field goal with 21.9 seconds left in regulation to forge a 44-44 tie, then withstood a missed right-baseline jumper by Bishop’s Kendalyn Thomas.
The Lady Wildcats took a 52-48 lead with 28.6 seconds left in the first overtime, then Faulkner tied it when Smith sank two of three free throws with 12.7 seconds left after she was fouled attempting a 3-pointer, and Destrinee Dale, after the Lady Sun Chiefs forced a turnover, put in a layup with 2.6 seconds left to force the second overtime.
Trailing 56-55 in the second OT after Thomas sank two free throws with 52.4 seconds left, Faulkner missed two shots but each time the ball went out of bounds off a Lady Wildcat, setting up Brown’s game-winning 3-pointer.
Bishop trailed 26-12 with about nine minutes left˝ in the first half, then closed the gap to 27-23 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats outscored Faulkner 14-4 in the first 7:46 of the second half to take a 37-31 lead, but couldn’t maintain it.
Smith finished with a team-high 17 points after scoring just two in the first half. She also had seven rebounds. Dale had 12 points and five rebounds and Brown scored 11 points, pulled down six rebounds, passed off for four assists and made two steals while playing more than 46 minutes
Coach Linda Pitts stayed with her starters for much of the game, and Jessica Lindsey, who had 14 rebounds and six steals, Crystal Morris (eight rebounds and four steals), Smith and Dale also logged more than 40 minutes each.
Thomas and Gerica Johnson played the entire game for Bishop and
scored 21 and 14 points respectively. Thomas also had 10 rebounds while Johnson snared seven missed shots.
Kimberly Hatch played nearly 43 minutes for Bishop and finished with 17 points before fouling out.
The game was played in the Shaw High gym due to renovation work that is taking place in BSCC’s performing arts building, which also houses its gymnasium.
