Freshman Nicole Sweatt pitched a no-hitter in the first game of a home doubelheader against Pensacola Junior College last Thursday afternoon at Faulkner State Community College, but the Lady Sun Chiefs dropped the second game 10-3 and were also swept on the road Saturday by Gulf Coast CC of Perkinston, Miss., in non-conference fastpitch softball play. FSCC 1-3, PJC 0-10
Sweatt struck out six batters and didn’t walk or hit any in the opener of the make-up doubleheader that was rained out Feb. 21, but two FSCC errors prevented her from being credited with a perfect game.
The Lady Sun Chiefs scored a run in the first and added two insurance runs twice, in the third and fourth innings.
Beth Readhead had a pair of doubles and drove in two FSCC runs. Meaghan Wallace and Amanda Spillers singled for the other two Lady Sun Chiefs hits. Spillers had two runs batted in and Terri Johnson picked up an RBI.
PJC struck for three runs in the first inning and two in the second for an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap against starter Amber Wilson, who pitched the first two innings and gave up five runs on four hits.
Sweatt relieved and pitched the last five innings but was tagged for 10 hits on her second go-around against the Lady Pirates. Pensacola added a run in the fifth and four in the seventh against Sweatt and finished with 14 hits.
Stephanie Beahn had three of Faulkner’s seven hits and drove in two runs. Meagan Sloke doubled for the Lady Sun Chiefs.
Gulf Coast 1-4, FSCC 0-2
In the first game, Sweatt scattered six hits and blanked Gulf Coast until the sixth inning. She struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.
Kristen Lambert, Johnson, Kandace Breeland and Beahn singled for Faulkner’s four hits.
Gulf Coast spotted the Lady Sun Chiefs two runs in the third inning in the second game on Lambert’s two-run home run, then rallied back with a run in its next at bat and three in the fifth.
Jessica Morris was the losing pitcher. She pitched the first four-plus innings. Sweatt finished up. Neither pitcher had a strikeout or walk.
Wallace, Johnson, Beahn and Sloke had singles for FSCC.
