FAIRHOPE, Ala.—The Lady Pirates used a 19-point first quarter en-route to an easy and convincing 67-25 win over region foe Foley Friday night.
The Pirates, who haven’t played a game since before the holidays shook off any rust they may have had by running up and down the court against the visiting Lions.
“We haven’t played since the week before Christmas and they were itching to get back on the floor. They didn’t want to practice they wanted to play.” Pirate head coach Tori Johnson said.
The Pirates who were the more dominate team both physically and athletically controlled the pace of play all night long especially in the first quarter when they used great ball movement to open some scoring opportunities.
“Ball movement is one of our key focuses. We don’t want to stay stagnant. We want to move the ball. We did a great job pushing the ball up the court.” Johnson said. “I can’t tell you how many points we had off layups that happened because we did push the ball up the court. Even when we did get it in our half court set we did a good job executing our sets.”
One player that benefited from the Pirate success Friday was Haley Melton who led all Pirate scorers with 15 points Friday night.
“She has great form and fundamentally she is very sound. If she is on than she is on.” Johnson said. “I think at the beginning she came out shooting the ball well.”
The Pirates jumped on the Lions from the opening tip-off. They outscored them by a score of 19-2 in the opening period. The Pirates continued to shoot the ball well and pushed their lead out to 34-10 at halftime. The Pirates continued their offensive barrage and rolled on to the easy 42 point win.
With the win the Pirates earn their first region victory and now sit at 1-3 within Class 6A Area 3.
“All of the regional games begin now. After Christmas it’s all area play. We need to continue to play the way we played tonight.” Johnson said. “We can always improve. We need to finish shots. We handled the ball pretty well tonight but we can always improve.”
