GULF SHORES, Ala. – Fairhope's Lady Pirates defeated Gulf Shores 15-25, 25-20, 28-30, 25-22, 15-6 on Thursday.

Fairhope (2-0) lost two of the first three games but won the last two.

"I just kept telling them keep fighting, keep fighting, keep fighting. We're gonna win, we're gonna win. We're going to make this five games and we did," Fairhope coach Jessica Webb said. "There at the end we just turned it on. I told them 'Do not go out there and just hit, don't freeball it. You kill it. If you end up walking away with a loss, it isn't going to be because you weren't crushing the ball.' And they did, so I was really, really proud of us."

Kali Martin had 10 digs, nine kills and eight aces for the Lady Pirates. Sarah Litteken had 11 digs and 11 assists, Taylor O'Neill had seven kills and three blocks, and Rachel Cooper had 10 blocks and six kills in the win. Jessica Bunch added six blocks, and Melissa Rew had five blocks.

Mary-Layson Gottfried had 15 kills and Virginia Jones had 17 digs for Gulf Shores in the loss.

"Fairhope is just better, bottom line," Gulf Shores coach Wing Brett said. "They are a better team. They work harder. They want it worse. We stood out there and kept waiting for them to go away but they kept coming after us."

The Lady Pirates host the Back To School Bash tournament on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Gulf Shores (3-3) will play in the tournament.
