GULF SHORES, Ala. – After winning the 5A Area 2 tournament on Tuesday, the Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins are set to host the Class 5A Regional A today.

Play will begin at 10 a.m. as the Lady Dolphins (31-17) play Russell County and St. Paul’s plays Rehobeth. 5A Area 2 runner-up Spanish Fort will play Tallassee and Faith Academy will play Eufala at 11:15 a.m. The semifinal round is set for 1:30 p.m. with the consolation and championship rounds to follow at 2:45 and 4 p.m.

“We play the runner up of Areas 3 and 4 to start, and this year St. Paul’s and us are on the same side,” Gulf Shores coach Wing Brett said after winning the area tournament. “It could make for an interesting second round.”

Spanish Fort coach Barclay Kercher said her team needs to play better defense to be successful.

“I think that at practice we are going to have to have a better defensive game for us,” she said after her team fell to Gulf Shores in the area tournament final. “We are going to practice big time on blocking and getting that killer instinct to be ready for Saturday.”

Robertsdale, Daphne travel for Baker Regional

MOBILE – Class 6A Area 3 champ Daphne and runner-up Robertsdale will play in the 6A Regional at Baker today.

Play will begin at 10 a.m. as Satsuma plays Baker and Robertsdale plays Murphy. Daphne will play Davidson and Mary G. Montgomery will face McGill-Toolen at 11:15 a.m.

The semifinal round will be played at 1:30 p.m., followed by the consolation round and championship at 2:45 and 4 p.m.

Top-ranked Bayside travels for Geneva regional

GENEVA – Class 3A defending champ Bayside will play at Geneva in a 3A regional today.

The top-ranked Admirals will face Dale County at 10 a.m. Trinity Presbyterian, Geneva, T.R. Miller, Daleville, Opp and Montgomery Academy will also participate in the regional.

The consolation round is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. and the championship round is set for 4 p.m.

Top 4 advance

The top four finishers in each Regional tournament will advance to the sub-state round set for Oct. 21.

The Elite Eight championship state tournament will take place Oct. 27-28 at the Pelham Civic Complex.
