In Loving Memory of
Käthe Johanna Graichen Wilson
Mar. 23, 1935 – Nov. 4, 2025

Nov. 4, 2025, Käthe Johanna Graichen Wilson, loving wife and mother of three, passed away peacefully at the age of 90 to be with her late husband Eugene, just in time for their 70th Wedding Anniversary. She was a long-time resident of Mobile and Fairhope Alabama.

Käthe Johanna was born in 1935 in a village named Berger an der Elster in Thuringia Germany. She had a challenging childhood, but thankfully she had her beloved Opa to help and encourage her. At the age of 16, she escaped from East Germany and managed to make her way to Frankfurt am Main Germany where her mother long awaited. When she arrived, she had nothing but a small suitcase, her accordion and a doll.

Climbing the hill to Heidelberg Castle is where the second part of the story began for Käthe. On one side she was making ends meet for her mother Charlotte by working as a seamstress; and on the other, she was falling in love with Gene, the only man for her. Eugene, who at that time was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, was in the process of persuading her German mother to let Käthe go to “Amerika.”

Gene and Käthe were married in Germany in 1955 and shortly thereafter, Käthe began her new life in America. She raised two daughters and one son in which she instilled high moral values and a hard work ethic. She enthusiastically studied to learn English and became a naturalized citizen but never lost her German accent. When people would ask her where she was from, she would tell them “Germany,” but would quickly follow-up with, “I am no longer German – I am an American!” She blazed a new life in America and became the matriarch of a family that loved her dearly.

Käthe loved gardening and there was nothing she couldn’t grow and have flourish. She loved being outdoors under the sun and spent almost every weekend taking her children to the beach or the University’s pool. She also learned to enjoy her many outings on the Boston Whaler, exploring every lake, stream, bay and gulf that Gene could convince her to traverse with him and the kids. She sewed, gardened, cooked the greatest food – especially German deserts – and spoke “to the point” so you always knew where you stood with her. She also worked outside of the home for a number of years while her children attended University.

Käthe and Gene were married for 65 years and were close friends and associates with the University of South Alabama where Eugene Wilson taught Geography and Earth Sciences. Dr. Wilson retired as Emeritus Professor of Geography in 1996. Käthe and Gene moved to Fairhope, Alabama in 2005 and became members and Friends of the Fairhope Museum of History.

Käthe is survived by two daughters, Lillian and Katharina and one son, Clinton and their respective spouses. She also had five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored and loved very much.

Käthe was preceded in death by her mother Charlotte Graichen (105) and one sister Gisela Hering (91). She was buried with her husband Eugene M. Wilson in Fairhope, Alabama, in Nov. 2025 at the Alabama State Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery. To read more of our remarkable parents’ and grandparents’ stories visit: www.eugenemwilson.com.
