FOLEY — Foley Mayor John Koniar recently announced his bid for a second full term in office.
The mayoral election will take place on Aug. 28.
“With over 30 years’ experience as an elected official in the city of Foley, six as mayor, proven leadership is the campaign theme once again,” Koniar said in a news release. “I feel I have guided the city through troubled economic times, been a good steward of our citizens’ tax dollars and have improved the quality of life here in our community.”
In his announcement, Koniar cited 2012 accomplishments.
“This year we are up 2.1 percent year-to-date over FY11 in sales-tax revenue,” he said. “We completed a final settlement with BP, which brought the total recovered from BP for oil spill losses and expenses to $1.8 million. FY11 city expenses closed the year $234,000 under budget while general-fund revenues closed $500,000 over budget.
“We spent more than $2 million in capital expenses and $740,000 in road-related maintenance,” Koniar continued. “Some of the projects included, Cedar Street idewalks; CR20/Glenlakes sidewalks and decorative lights and Streetscape Phase II in Uptown Foley.”
The incumbent mayor also pointed to city accolades received while he has been in office.
“We were recently designated as an Alabama City of Excellence, ACE,” Koniar said. “There were three phases that the city had to certify themselves in over a three-year process. These phases included detailing our communities assets and weaknesses, development and strategic planning for the future and finally, implementation of these plans to ensure positive growth in business development, education enhancement, infrastructure, health and human services, retiree attraction, tourism, economic development and quality of life.”
“I am very proud of the effort our employees put into this project,” Koniar continued. “It’s a significant achievement.”
