Kiwanis Poker Run early registration ends April 7

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Save $50 on the entry fee and increase your chances of taking home $15,000 by registering before April 7 for the May 1 Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club Hi-Lo Poker Run.

The entry fee is $200 before April 7, and early bird registrations will go into a drawing for one automatic placement in the final round. (Visit gulfshoreskiwanis.org for forms & details).

The Poker Run is not a race. It’s a day outside with friends and family helping raise funds for a good cause. Participants don’t even have to know how to play poker to have an opportunity to win $15,000.

The run starts with the 7 p.m. captain’s party at Guy Harvey’s at The Wharf on April 30. Registrations will be accepted up until then.

The Poker Run will last from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. the following day. Immediately following the Poker Run, at 4:30 p.m., participants will again meet at Guy Harvey’s at The Wharf to enjoy fun, food, beverages and determine the grand prize winner.

Each $250 entry fee entitles that boat or vehicle to receive five certificates for five hands of poker. Additional poker hand certificates are available for $50 each, and holders of certificates may buy additional poker hands for $25 each.

Each boat captain receives a Poker Run T-shirt, with additional T-shirts available at the event.

There are 10 destination points along local waterways for all participants and a few additional locations on land. The more destination points you visit during the day, the more cards you earn, thereby increasing your chance for a better hand.

With six hours to visit checkpoints, there is ample time to enjoy a day out and about, whether it’s by land or sea.

Players will be dealt poker hands one-on-one. Toward the end of the evening, the top four “Hi” hands, the one “Lo” hand, one auctioned hand and the winner of the early bird drawing advance to the final round, where seven participants play 5-card-draw.

The low hand is eliminated until there are two finalists. Those two cut the cards for the grand prize.

The Poker Run is the primary fundraiser for the Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club. Proceeds fund scholarships to graduating Gulf Shores High School seniors.

Over the years, the club has awarded more than $125,000 in such scholarships. Many sponsorship opportunities are available.

“Everyone can do something!’’ is the Gulf Shores Kiwanis Poker Run motto. For sponsorship info, call Andrew Harrell at (251) 968-1555 or visit www.gulfshoreskiwanis.org.

Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores members meet Tuesdays at noon for lunch in the Palmer Dining Room at Craft Farms Golf Course. Guests are always welcome.
