FAIRHOPE, Ala. — A Fairhope man was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with the alleged burglary of a gas station on State Highway 181, following pursuit by a K-9 unit.

Walter Roberts Street, 22, of 9332 County Road 34 in Fairhope, was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center on Feb. 10 on felony charges of burglary 3rd degree and possession of burglary tools and a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief 3rd degree.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 9, Fairhope police officers responded to a burglar alarm at the Short Stop Gas Station at 17027 State Highway 181.

Sgt. Jeremy Anderson and officers Eugene Maye, Trent Scott and Ben Taylor found that a pry-tool had been used to force entry into the business, and then conducted a search of the building and surrounding area, according to a Fairhope Police Department news release.

“Although the suspect had gained entry to the story, the business was empty when the officers searched it,” police spokesman Sgt. Craig Sawyer said. “The officers were able to track the suspect toward a nearby field, where they lost the trail in a wooded area.”

Officer David Hall and his K-9, Nytro, also responded to the incident and tracked the suspect, finding him hiding in dense brush.

“Despite the commands of the officers, the suspect refused to surrender,” Sawyer said. “The K-9 was then used to take the suspect into custody.”

Street was treated at Thomas Hospital for minor bites received from the K-9 during the arrest and was booked into Fairhope Municipal Jail, prior to being transferred to the county corrections center, according to the news release.

He remained in custody as of press time with a total bond of $10,500 for the three charges, according to county online records.
