Jubilee Festival coming to Olde Towne Daphne this weekend

DAPHNE, Ala.—On Saturday and Sunday, Daphne will host the 22nd annual Jubilee Festival on Main Street in Olde Towne Daphne.

The fine-arts and crafts festival will showcase artists from around the area, highlighting their works.

“We get jewelry, pottery, artwork and people who make wooden sculptures and furniture,” said Sally Wagner, co-chair for the festival. “It has to be a certain percent created and made by the artists.”

This year’s event also aims to help the Gulf Coast recover from the oil spill crisis.

“Ten percent of the profits of the festival will go to Alabama Coastal Foundation towards the regeneration of the Gulf Coast,” said Darrelyn Bender, president of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s event will also allow people to watch football games on Saturday in the council chambers at City Hall. A big-screen television will be set up.

“It’s a family-fun event,” Kathie Barton, communications coordinator for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, said. “Everyone can have a good time. It’s a celebration of family.”

There will be live, local entertainment. A food court will be located in the driveway of Daphne City Hall.

“One of the things that is unique to the festival is the kids’ part,” Wagner said. “For an entry fee, kids can go into (Centennial) Park and put their handprints on the fence and sign their names.”

She also said that a clown will make balloon toys for the kids, and there will be fish painting for kids in the park.

“The kids paint a fish, put a piece of paper on it and they have a picture of a fish,” Wagner said.

To kick off the festival, a plaque will be displayed to celebrate small towns in Alabama. The city applied for the plaque, and it will be put in front of city hall near the fountain.
