Joseph E Johnston, born March 30, 1916 in Mill Valley, Calif., a resident of Fairhope, died Thursday, Aprip 9, 2009 at his residence.
He was a graduate of the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education in 1935. He served as first lieutenant in World War II in the 807th Tank Destroyer Battalion, which was attached to Patton’s 3rd Army in the liberation of Metz, France.
He graduated from Louisiana Tech and the University of Iowa. He taught theater arts at the University of Miami and the University of Texas for 17 years. For 15 years he worked as head scenic artist at ABC T.V. in Hollywood.
He moved to Fairhope in 1994 and attended The First Church of Christ, Scientists.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Maurice Johnston; two brothers, Charles Johnston and Leon Johnston; a sister, Lois of Oregon; a daughter Jill McLemore of Fairhope; son, Joe (Lisa) Johnston of Santa Barbara, Calif.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Fallon, Shawnee, Cole, Henry and Lottie; three great-grandchildren, Tara, Taylor and Griffin; and one great-great-grandson, Matthew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13 at Wolfe Bay Funeral Home, Fairhope.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education.
