ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Jerry Johnson has announced his candidacy for Place 3 on the Orange Beach City Council for the Aug. 28 municipal election.
“From my visits with citizens over the past year, I have worked to determine what is important to our families,” Johnson said. “Those issues include smart growth with jobs and businesses that fit our city, maintain safe and secure neighborhoods by providing our police, fire, and public works departments with the best tools, investing in the education of our children by helping our school achieve excellence with curriculum, technology and fine arts programs within a safe, secure, and disciplined environment.
Johnson, a Bessemer, has lived in Orange Beach for six years. Prior to that he lived in Birmingham for 12 years.
Johnson is a 1974 graduate of the University of Alabama in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Alabama Power Company for 32 years.
During that time he worked in cities such as Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Montevallo, Reform, Jasper, and Pelham where he was actively involved with local community development, local chambers of commerce, and civic clubs such as Jaycees, Rotary International, and Boy Scouts of America.
He served on the board of directors of the National Management Association, Leadership Shelby County, Alabama Textile Manufacturing Association, Blue Ridge Conference on Leadership, and the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC.
Locally, he is serving on the Orange Beach Business Advisory Council, the Orange Beach Transportation, Utilities, and Public Works committee, and the Capital Campaign committee for the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach. He recently graduated from the 2011-12 class of Leadership Baldwin County.
He also is a member of the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and the Orange Beach United Methodist church where he serves as Chairman of the Staff Parrish Relations committee.
He has been married to Yolanda Devine Johnson from Bay Minette for 16 years. They both own J Devine Company with clients in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Foley, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Hiawassee, Ga. Johnson has one son. Brad and his wife, Kim along with the only grandson, Jacob, live in Birmingham.
“I want to provide new leadership with a vision for the City of Orange Beach,” he said. “There are great opportunities on the horizon for the city and if we have positive, forward looking leadership we can help make the city a better place to live, work, play and educate our children.”
