John F. Uhr, 86, of Foley, died Thursday, June 9, 2011.

He was born, June 12, 1924, in Sand Lake Mich., and moved to Foley from Pensacola, Fla., in 1992.

He served in the U.S. Navy from February 1943 until March 1974, during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. As an E9 Chief he had over 300 carrier landings during his 31 year Navy career.

He was a life-time member of the Elks Lodge, VFW, and American Legion. He joined the Elks in Flat Rock, Michigan in 1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Emily Uhr; sisters Agnes Swistak and Mildred Bahnmiller; his wife Evelyn; daughter Jonna Lyn Roderick; and grandson, David Schultz.

Survivors include daughter, Vanna Lee (Peter) McHale; stepsons, Cary and Craig Merkerson; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; ex-spouse and companion for 40 years, Billie Jean Merkerson.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26 at Foley Elks Lodge, 2621 S. Juniper St. Graveside services will be in Tecumseh, Mich.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Museum of Naval Aviation, Pensacola, Fla., or the Odyssey Health Care Hospice of Foley.
