James Edwin Pollard

James Edwin Pollard, 83, a native of Winona, Miss., and a longtime resident of Point Clear, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010.

He graduated as an honor student from Greenville (Miss.) High School in June of 1945. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a B.B.A. degree; School of Banking of the South at L.S.U. and Trust School of Birmingham Southern.

He was a member of various civic clubs having served in official capacity in each. He was president of Mobile West Rotary Club, Ole Miss Alumni Club and Kappa Sigma Alumni Club. He was a former senior vice president of First National Bank of Mobile and retired as vice president and trust officer of AmSouth Bank. He was responsible for the expansion from the original seven branches to a total of 18 branches of First National Bank.

He served as chairman of the Episcopal School; vestryman and senior warden of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. He was treasurer of the diocese of the Central Gulf Coast for five years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Ridings Pollard; mother, Nell Smith Pollard; and sister, Marjorie Pollard Fleming.

Survivors include his wife, Janella Wood Pollard of Point Clear; two sons, Vernon Ridings Pollard of Point Clear and James Edwin (Starke) Pollard II of Fairhope, two grandchildren, James Edwin Pollard III and Oliver Starke Pollard; brother, Robert Lewis (Mavis) Pollard of Clinton, Miss.; brother-in-law, Maj. Gen. Samuel Ernest Fleming Jr. of Tupelo, Miss.; niece, Marcia Fleming Hammett; nephews, Dr. Samuel E. (Mary) Fleming III and Stephen M. (Janice) Fleming; grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m. with a Celebration of Life memorial service at noon Friday, Dec. 17 at St. James Episcopal Church.
