POINT CLEAR, Alabama — McGill-Toolen Catholic edged the Fairhope Pirates 292-294 for the 6A Section 1 Boys Golf championship Monday at Lakewood Golf Club. Baker finished third.
Fairhope’s Alex Green defended his 2012 individual section title with a 2-under par best score of 70 on the Dogwood course. His sister Virginia Green who also repeated her 2012 individual section title shared the medalist honor this year with Best Phakamad of Northview as each shot a co-champion low of 74.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Steven Setterstrom (71), Sheldon Statkewicz (72), Allan Cameron (73) and Dave Engerson in the scoring four at 76. Fairhope also had each of its top four in the 70s with Colby Carr (71), Trent Baggerly (75) and Spence Fraser finishing at 78.
Four unattached individuals also qualified with a score of 78 each: Marshall Brown of Fairhope, Brent Wright and John Raciatti of McGill-Toolen and James Lilley of Theodore.
The next stop for the qualifying teams and individuals will be the sub-state tournament at Heron Lakes in Mobile Monday.
Fairhope coach Chuck Domino was pleased with his team's best total score of the year so far.
“We’re playing our best golf right now and 294 is our best score yet. I know some of the guys are a little disappointed to come up short by two strokes, but I’m proud of how well they did and all the work they have put in. This just shows we need to maybe put in a little bit more.
“I think if we stay focused and work on making quality shots this week, we might play well enough to cut a few strokes off of that. But congratulations to McGill. They have a fine team and they have consistently improved and we just hope we can stay close enough and be in a position to advance to state. I think we showed ourselves that we can compete and gave ourselves a big boost of momentum today.”
