Interview process set to begin for new chief in Silverhill

SILVERHILL, Alabama — Silverhill will soon begin the interview process to hire a new police chief, officials said at the Silverhill Town Council meeting on Monday.

The town has been contracting with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department to assist with police protection since voting to terminate Police Chief Kim Wasdin in January.

Mayor Tim Wilson said the application deadline for hiring a new chief ends April 14 and town officials will begin the interview process at that time. Once that position is filled, Wilson said, it will be up to the new chief to fill the other vacancy in the department.

The town is also negotiating to extend its contract with the Sheriff’s Department, Wilson said.

Council members met with town attorney Josh Myrick in an executive session for about 30 minutes during the March 7 meeting to discuss “imminent litigation,” Myrick said. Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack and Lt. John Aldrich were also included in the meeting.

There has been no further word of pending litigation since that time. A complaint has been filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of Wasdin.

In other business Monday, the council voted to change approve the adoption of an ordinance to its polling location from the town hall to the Silverhill Community Center.

According to the ordinance, which was approved for adoption at Monday’s meeting, Alabama state law allows municipal governments to change polling places no later than three months before a municipal election.

Opened in November of 2012, the community center is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ordinance will be published in a “newspaper of general circulation” and posted in three locations within the town before being brought back to the council for adoption.

Also at Monday’s meeting, town officials met with officials from Dollar General to discuss running water lines to the store’s new facility.

Wilson said following Monday’s meeting that the lease on the current facility, located on Silverhill Avenue between Second and Third streets, is up and officials decided to move to a larger facility, which will be located on East Boulevard.

Attempts to contact Dollar General for more information about the new store were unsuccessful.

Following the discussion with Dollar General officials, Wilson got into a heated exchange with a Silverhill resident who said he had “too much water” following storms the previous weekend.

The resident said he was tired of the town not doing anything about drainage issues and that he was going to “take care of it myself.”

The resident was told repeatedly by Wilson that he was not allowed to do any work in the town’s right of way.
