Hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts expected at first state trails conference

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - All trails lead to Fairhope next weekend when the city will host the first statewide trails conference.

“A lot of states do these, so it’s tremendously exciting to have (Alabama) do one and to have it in Fairhope,” said City Councilwoman Debbie Quinn, who helped bring the 2011 Alabama Trails Conference to town. “It’s geared mainly for people who work on trails or with nonprofit groups that establish, promote or maintain trails in their area, but it will also attract a broad range of people with many different interests. A lot of cities are sending their staff from recreation and parks departments to attend.”

More than 250 people from across the state, representing trail user groups, nonprofits, land management organizations, local governments, and state and federal agencies, are expected to attend the three-day conference.

Keynote speakers scheduled for the event are state Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey, and Doug Phillips, creator, producer and host of “Discovering Alabama” on Alabama Public Television.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about trails, network with other trail groups, see trail products and experience some of the state’s existing trails,” said city spokeswoman Sherry Sullivan. “The conference will include more than 30 sessions on topics including economic benefits, partnerships and funding, planning and development, trails and health, social media and project updates. Vendor exhibits and mobile workshops are also planned.”

Quinn, who also helped established the city’s skateboard park two years ago, said that Rob Grant of the Alabama Department of Community Affairs contacted her last year about where the conference should be located.

“ADECA was looking at several destination spots,” Quinn said. “I spoke about our extensive Eastern Shore trail system, kayaking and other outdoor entertainment possibilities as reasons for locating in Fairhope. I met with the mayor, and we worked out the details. The city has done a fabulous job supporting the conference.”

The April 1-3 event is presented by ADECA, the National Park Service, Fresh Air Family and Cheaha Trail Riders, and sponsors include the Alabama Association of Regional Councils, Baldwin County Trailblazers, Yamaha, Limestone County Parks and Recreation Board, the cities of Fairhope, Orange Beach, and Daphne and the Alabama Trails Commission.

“The conference will offer something for anyone who has an interest in the planning, development and enjoyment of trails of all types in Alabama,” said Grant, recreational trails manager at ADECA’s recreation programs department.

The three-day event at the Fairhope Civic Center from April 1-3 costs $145 for participants, but the expo hall is open daily for free to the public. Register at the door or online at www.trails.alabama.gov.
