Hot Air Balloon Festival returns to OWA with sky-high fun and family entertainment

Posted

The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival is set to soar once again at OWA Parks & Resort, bringing three days of colorful skies, live entertainment and family fun May 1-3.

Now in its 21st year, the free-admission event will feature more than 50 hot air balloons from across the country. Hosted by the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, the festival has become a signature Gulf Coast attraction, drawing thousands to Baldwin County each spring.

"This event is more than just a breathtaking display of colors — it's a celebration of community, bringing people together from all walks of life, said Rachel Spear, director of events for the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. "From local businesses benefiting from the tourism boost to families making lifelong memories, the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival lifts not only balloons but also spirits, connections and our local economy."

The festivities begin Thursday at 4 p.m. with a performance by the Undertow Band at the OWA Amphitheater. The high-flying Disc-Connected K9 Frisbee Dog Show follows, leading into the festival's first Balloon Glow at 7:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Friday's activities start at 3 p.m., featuring more live music, balloon displays, tethered rides and another performance from the crowd-favorite K9 team. Guests can also stop by the Meet and Greet tent for a visit with animals from the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

Saturday brings a full day of family-friendly programming, kicking off at 10 a.m. Lawn games, arts and crafts vendors, and continuous live entertainment will fill the grounds. At 2:30 p.m., visitors will have the chance to meet hot air balloon pilots. The day ends with a headline performance by the Tip Tops, a regional favorite known for their high-energy shows.

Guests can also explore OWA's lineup of attractions, including its 23-ride amusement park, Tropic Falls indoor water park and outdoor wave pool. During the festival, discounted Twilight Tickets will be available for Tropic Falls after 4 p.m. for $34.99. The offer is valid May 1-3 only. More information is available at www.visitowa.com/special-offers.

"We're thrilled to welcome an incredible lineup of arts and crafts vendors this year! From kids activities to creative woodworking, there is something for everyone," Spear told Gulf Coast Media. "I am particularly excited about seeing the Disc Connected K9s perform again this year."

Festival organizers emphasized that hot air balloon flights and glows are weather-dependent. Balloons typically launch at sunrise or within an hour of sunset when wind conditions are safest.

Volunteers play a vital role in the success of the festival, Spear added.

"We are always looking for more volunteers," Spear said. "Volunteers are the heart and soul of our festival. Their dedication, energy and passion make this event possible, from helping pilots prepare for flight to ensuring guests have an unforgettable experience. Without them, we couldn't bring the magic of this festival to life for our community."
