MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Baldwin County will have four girls and three boys playing soccer for the South sides next month in the 15th North-South all-star games in July.
Anne Baumhower of Fairhope, Jaime Breitweiser of Daphne, Kasey Fowler of Foley and Sophie Simantel of Gulf Shores were among the state's incoming seniors selected for the South girls team. Jacob Ard and Lans Stallings of Fairhope and Eric Jaegge of Spanish Fort were named to the boys team.
Daphne coach Rick Andrew said Breitweiser has come into her own the last two seasons helping the Lady Trojans to back-to-back final four trips and the runner-up trophy this year.
“Jaime has steadily become one of the most consistent players in the area,” he said. “Her hard work and dedication have helped her to become a very strong and steady player. I think it is an honor to have Jaime represent Daphne High School. She is one of many players in a long line of players who have represented Daphne at this event. She will flourish as a player and person.”
Fairhope coach Steve Morisani Jr. said Baumhower is a strong defender and midfielder who can also take the ball forward all the way to the goal.
“I am glad that Anne made the team,” he said. “She’ll assimilate in with the other girls on the team fairly easily. She is a hard working player who has the talent to play at the next level. Hopefully she’ll get a look at outside back where she is a dangerous threat to get forward and attack; however she can also play in the midfield and be just as effective. She sees the field extremely well but will have to play the ball early against what should be a very organized North All-Star Team defense.”
Simantel’s coach at Gulf Shores, Jason Thompson, said the Lady Dolphins top college prospect was the epitome of commitment to her sport.
“I am so proud of Sophie, and she is much deserving of this award,” he said. “It is truly a privilege to work with such a talented, dedicated, and great young lady.”
Fowler helped the Lady Lions to a much improved season including a 2011 playoff berth.
Spanish Fort boys coach Joseph German was happy to see Jaegge recognized for his efforts.
“We are all very proud of him. He is the first boy selected, from our school,” German said. “He is a great player and a great team leader. And we here at Spanish Fort High school could not be more proud of him.”
Ard and Stallings both helped lead the Pirates to their ninth-consecutive Region championship this year and both were 2011 Battle of the Bay selections.
The girls soccer match will be played July 12 at 5 p.m., at the Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex, followed by the boys soccer match at 7 p.m.
The Alabama All-Star Sports Week runs from July 11-15.
