DAPHNE, Ala. — Homeowners Hurricane Insurance Initiative members will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Meetings aim to mobilize the public to get involved with measures that could help decrease homeowners-insurance premiums.
“We’re going to review our accomplishments in getting the transparency bill before the legislature, and we will talk about our strategy on how we are going to win this issue,” said Michelle Kurtz, staff member of Ecumenical Ministries, parent of ACT-II—All Churches Together—an interfaith organization responsible for the initiative’s meetings.
The group’s proposed bill asks that the Alabama Department of Insurance post the number of homeowners-insurance policies sold, the dollar amount of premiums collected and the dollar amount of claims pending and paid out so that citizens can contrast information with zip codes in the northern part of the country. It also seeks a verbal description of the model that the department of insurance uses to make decisions.
The last meeting was held on May 22. The initiative is entering its third year since inception.
There will be regular meetings on the third Thursday of the month. Time and location are yet to be determined.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is located at 8271 Whispering Pines Road. The public is invited to attend all the initiative’s meetings.
