ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Right after you put the Thanksgiving turkey away and survive the throngs in the stores on “Black Friday,” it’s time to head to the PZK Hall on Highway 104 for a kinder, gentler holiday season. It should take one back to a time when holiday gifts came from the heart, and shoppers will be able to find all sorts of unique and one-of-a- kind items that you won’t find in every store of every mall.
Plus, the bazaar is a fund raiser for a very worthy institution.- the George P. Thames Senior Center in Robertsdale.
This is the biggest fundraiser for the center,” said Jim Jones, one of the event organizers.
You can purchase all sorts of holiday gifts for most of the people on your list at the fifth annual George P. Thames Senior Center bazaar Saturday, Nov. 28. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the hall will be filled with the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas.
“Several ladies will be bringing their handiwork to sell,” said Lura Jones, of Robertsdale. Jones and her husband, Jim, are running the sale, which is a major fundraiser for the Senior Center.
“There will be people selling and monogramming purses”,” said Nell Calloway of Robertsdale
And while shopping for unique treasures is something the grown-ups will like, there will be a petting zoo, the “Funny Farm Petting Farm,” run by Scott Lassiter for youngsters to enjoy and there will be an appearance by Santa and an opportunity for youngsters to take a photo and present their Christmas lists to the Man In The Red Suit.
Admission to the bazaar is $2 per person, and refreshments will be sold.
“I’m glad we are having food,’ said Calloway. “People will stay.”
Calloway is going to have a number of games for the young and the young at heart. There will be a bean bag toss, a “rebound” game where players get balls into cups and “Dolly Peg” games among others. The games are priced right at 3 for 25 cents, and all proceeds, Calloway says, go to the Senior Center.
“We are going to have a drawing at least on time an hour,” said Jim Jones. “You will have to be present to win.” Jim
Jones explained that all the vendors at the sale have been asked to provide at least one item for the drawing. Attendees will receive a number for the drawing with their admission.
This will be the second year Laura Whalen of Loxley will participate in the bazaar. She sells a line of jewelry, and can’t wait for this year’s sale.
“You get a lot of people shopping for Christmas. Last year I had fun and spent a lot of time talking to people.”
