DAPHNE, Ala.—The next meeting of the Baldwin County Historical Society will be held at 2:30 p.m.  on Sunday, March 8 at the Old Methodist Church Museum of Daphne at 405 Dryer Ave.

Admission to the March 8 meeting is free; the public is invited.

Michael Bailey will present a brief history of Fort Morgan, including an update on current restoration work at the fort and a preview of upcoming events.

Bailey is a 1978 graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery, with a degree in history. He was elected to Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society in History, in recognition of his conspicuous scholarship at AUM.

He began a career in public history in 1977 when he joined the museum staff of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. He served as a member of the archives’ curatorial staff until 1983 when he joined the Alabama Historical Commission's Survey and Registration Division, working with the National Register of Historic Places.

From 1985 to 1998 he was operations manager of the Confederate Memorial Park near Clanton, Ala.

From 1998 until 2005 he was the curator of the Fort Morgan National Historical Landmark. During this time he appeared on the History Channel and on the Travel Channel in programs dealing with Fort Morgan and the Battle of Mobile Bay.

Following his retirement from state service, he joined the staff of the Office of Army Reserve History at Fort McPherson, Ga., where he served as curator of the National Museum of the Army Reserve and as a member of the History Office’s Living History Program.

In August 2006 he returned to the Fort Morgan National Historic Landmark as education coordinator and is responsible for the development of site educational programs, living history programs and other events.
