The Barnwell Community Organization will celebrate the history and restoration of a treasured local landmark during the sixth annual Barnwell Community Day: Barbecue & Spuds Festival on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the historic Barnwell Community Center.
The free festival will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and welcome residents and visitors for a day of food, entertainment, family activities and community traditions.
According to a news release from the organziation, the event will showcase the ongoing restoration and revitalization of the historic 1918 schoolhouse, now known as the Barnwell Community Center. Organizers hope to bring the community together to celebrate the area's agricultural heritage while supporting efforts to preserve the landmark for future generations.
Festival activities will include barbecue, potatoes, a 5K race, a one-mile fun run, arts and crafts vendors, open-play Mahjong, live music, face painting, family activities and concessions. Attendees can participate in morning races and games, browse local vendors and enjoy food and entertainment throughout the day.
The SPUD Run will kick off the morning with a shotgun-start 5K at 8 a.m., followed by a one-mile fun run at 8:45 a.m. Student participation in the SPUD Run is free.
At 9 a.m., Taters & Tiles Mahjong Open Play will begin, offering complimentary games in a friendly setting for players of all skill levels.
“The Barnwell Community Center has connected generations of local families, and we are committed to protecting its legacy for years to come,” said Chris Haney, Barnwell Community Organization board member and managing owner of Old Tyme Feed. “This celebration is a thank you and it is to recognize the continued supporters by inviting the locals and visitors to come celebrate the day and the new life brought to this historic landmark,” Haney said in the release.
Barnwell Community Day celebrates the people and traditions of the area's farming community while supporting the ongoing work to preserve and revitalize the former schoolhouse. The festival also offers an opportunity for residents and visitors to recognize the community members and supporters helping give the historic landmark new life.
The Barnwell Community Center is located at 13319 County Road 3 in Fairhope.
