Henry Christopher Martin, 95, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 in Spanish Fort.

He served as a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II in North Africa. He was a graduate of Georgetown University, and was a Foreign Service Officer with assignments in Trieste, Frankfurt, Monrovia, Bathurst, Geneva and Washington.

After retirement to a farm in Orange County, Va., he and his wife planted one of the first vineyards in Virginia in modern times, and he was a founding member of the Vinifera Wine Growers Association.

He was an active environmentalist and a former member of the board of the Piedmont Environmental Council.

Upon moving to Charlottesville in 1990, he was active in a number of organizations, including the Rivanna Rowing Club, where he rowed regularly. He was also the author of a history of rowing at the University of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Easter Berryman Martin.

He is survived by his son, Christopher B. Martin of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Hilary E. Martin of Fairhope; two grandsons; a sister, Kathleen Britto of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; and a brother, Dr. John O. Martin of Fairfax, Va.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
