FOLEY, Ala. — Habitat for Humanity will hold a chili cook-off fundraiser on Saturday, March 8 at Heritage Park in Foley.
Tickets are $5, and the event will feature a day of chili tasting, bake sales and entertainment. This year there will be a book sale, silent auction and tractor show as well.
“We have hundreds of books that are real bargains for book lovers,” said Rosemary Harris, event organizer.
A caricature artist will also be on-site and all the money earned for his work will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
About 20 teams will compete for the chili honors including People’s Choice and the Showmanship award.
“This is a fun chili competition and a great time for the whole family,” said Harris. "There really is something for everyone.”
The day will begin at 9 a.m. and at 9:30 a.m. the AtirArts Belly Dancers will perform. At 10 a.m. the Altridge Family will entertain the audience, and at 11 a.m. the chili tasting will begin while the Four Winds Barber Shop Chorus serenades the crowd. The tasting will last until 2 p.m., but at noon Elaine Petty will take the stage while judging occurs and at 1 p.m. winners will be announced. Following the awards, Ken Mathews will perform.
Gold sponsors for the event are Bay Community Church, Riviera Utilities and Thomas Hospital. Silver sponsors are Bancorp South, Bryant Bank, Century Tel, Hartmann Blackmon and Kilgore, Hellmich Electric, Island Orthodontics, Longcrier Builders, Ramona Hill, Reynolds Ready Mix, Safe Harbor Financial Services, Verizon Wireless and Gulf Shores’ Vision Bank.
“We’re so grateful to our sponsors and to the chili cooks for coming out. This event shows tremendous community support for Habitat's Women Build,” Harris said.
Proceeds from the cook-off will help fund Women Build, a program affiliated with Habitat for Humanity that is an all women's day of home building. This will be the ninth year for Women Build in Baldwin County. Since this affiliate was developed in 1990, 65 homes have been built.
This year’s Women Build will be March 29, and will be on Spring Run Road in Fairhope. Also that day, there will be a community build which anyone is welcome to participate in.
