Gulf Shores Summer Campers enjoy a day with the Mayor

Gulf Shores, Ala. – While some kids were spending their time inside, playing their favorite video games and watching television, kids participating in the City of Gulf Shores Summer Camp recently enjoyed a day with Mayor Robert Craft.

This unique experience gave kids a chance to see the behind-the-scenes of how their city operates. Mayor Craft led the kids, ranging in ages from 5 to 13, on a walking tour around the City offices and facilities.

The tour began at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center and continued to City Hall, where kids had an opportunity to sit in the Council Chambers and learn more about the business operations of the city. Leaving city Hall, Mayor Craft led the kids through a tour of the Municipal Courtroom and out to meet with a few of the local firemen.

On this stop, kids were awestruck as they watched firemen put on their gear and enjoyed the rare chance to actually climb up in the firetruck and experience, firsthand, what it would be like to be a firefighter.

However, this stop wasn't just about fun and games as the kids gained, potentially, lifesaving knowledge. The firemen took the time to explain important safety procedures in case of a fire, as well as, what to look for and listen for in the event a fireman comes to their rescue.

As the firemen headed back to work, the kids followed the Mayor on a tour of the administrative offices, where they took a seat in the Executive Conference Room and enjoyed a quick snack before heading off to the police station.

On the final stop of the day, the kids had the opportunity to see what goes on behind-the-scenes at the Police Station. From briefing rooms and offices to dispatch and the jail, the wide-eyed youngsters loved it all.

Perhaps the most fun of the day came when Officer Joe Taylor and his K-9 sidekick Dakota made a guest appearance. As recent graduates of the K-9 school in Pensacola, Officer Taylor and Dakota showed off several of their new tricks while explaining how Dakota is an integral part of the crime fighting team.

As you can see, the day was filled with excitement for everyone involved; however, this is just one example of the many fun and exciting activities planned throughout the City of Gulf Shores Summer Camp.

"I hope we can continue to do things like this on an annual basis," Mayor Craft said. "Summer Camp is a positive experience for everyone involved and I hope we can continue to build and expand each year."
