Gulf Shores has been nominated for USA Today's 10 Best Reader's Choice Awards for the best beach in the South, according to an April press release.

"Our expert panel selected Gulf Shores Beach as a contender for Best Beach in the South, which just launched," the press release stated. "Our contest gives voters four weeks to vote for the candidate of their choice."

There are 20 candidates on the list, and the top 10 winners will proceed to the next round of voting to become finalists for the ultimate title.

• Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Beach (Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, FL)
• Matagorda Beach (Matagorda, TX)
• Mustang Island State Park (Corpus Christi, TX)
• South Beach (Bald Head Island, NC)
• St. George Island State Park (St. George Island, FL)
• Stuart Beach (Stuart, FL)
• Tigertail Beach (Marco Island, FL)

Voting closes on May 22, and the winners will be announced at 11 a.m. on June 2.
