GULF SHORES, Ala. — Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft is back home with his family after undergoing elective surgery last month.
According to family spokesperson Tracy Holiday, Craft had been experiencing dizziness for several weeks; the last dizzy spell occurred during a hike, one of Craft’s many activities.
After experiencing dizziness, Craft made an appointment at Mobile Infirmary and had a series of tests run, including an MRI and CT scan. During his visit, Holiday said, doctors found a small mass blocking spinal fluids.
On Dec. 18 Craft entered the University of Alabama at Birmingham Neuro-Surgical Intensive Care Unit where doctors performed a biopsy procedure to relieve the pressure, which was stopping blood flow.
Holiday said after his surgery, Craft remained “perfectly fine to talk, and coherent.”
In a statement released to city employees and media, Craft said he had elected to take time during the holidays, when municipal activities were slow, to undergo tests.
“I have been in regular communication with my business and municipal associates in Gulf Shores and plan to continue to do so,” Craft said in the release. “We have recently made significant progress in getting city expenses under control and our city’s best years are in front of us. I plan to be a part of all that.”
Holiday said Craft will travel back to Birmingham Monday to receive the results of his pathology test. Mayor pro-tem Carolyn Doughty will conduct the Jan. 5 council meeting and will share Craft’s report with the public.
“He’s doing really great,” Holiday said Tuesday.
Holiday said if the results are good, Craft plans to be back in the office and will pick back up at the Jan. 12 meeting.
