Some lucky boater, biker or car cruiser will win $10,000, while all participants are guaranteed a fun day in paradise with stops at great local bistros during the May 14 Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club Hi-Lo Poker Run.
The Poker Run is not a race. It’s a day outside with friends and family helping raise funds for a good cause. Participants don’t even have to know how to play poker to have an opportunity to win the $10,000 grand prize.
With six hours to visit checkpoints, there is ample time to enjoy a day out and about in paradise, whether it’s by land or sea.
The Run starts with the 7 p.m. captain’s party at Guy Harvey’s at The Wharf on May 13, which is also the last day to register. The Poker Run will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the following day.
Immediately following the Poker Run, at 4:30 p.m., participants again meet at Guy Harvey’s at The Wharf to enjoy fun, food, beverages and determine the grand prize winner.
Each $200 entry fee entitles that boat or vehicle to receive five certificates for five hands of poker. Additional poker hand certificates are available for $50 each, and holders of certificates may buy additional poker hands for $25 each.
Each boat captain receives a Poker Run T-shirt, with additional T- shirts available at the event.
The more destination points visited during the day, the more cards you earn, thereby increasing your chance for a better hand. Zeke’s Landing Marina, Shucker’s at The Wharf, Tacky Jack’s, Pirates Cove, San Roc Cay Marina, LuLu’s at Homeport Marina, Cobalt, After Ours, Gulf Coast Chrysler and Barber Marina are the Poker Run stops.
Players will be dealt poker hands one-on-one. Towards the end of the evening, the top four “high” hands, the one “low” hand, one auctioned hand and the winner of the early-bird drawing advance to the final round, where seven participants play five-card-draw. The low hand is eliminated until there are two finalists. Those two cut the cards for the grand prize.
Proceeds will fund the Gulf Shores Kiwanians’ commitment to local youth.
During the years, the club has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships and grants to youth oriented charities.
“Everyone can do something!’’ is the Gulf Shores Kiwanis Poker Run motto.
