Gulf Shores International Airport has broken ground on a $15 million terminal expansion project, launching a fast-tracked construction effort designed to accommodate surging passenger growth and position the airport for continued expansion.
TripTek Construction LLC recently was awarded the construction contract and is tasked with opening the new terminal concourse before the airport’s summer flight schedule begins in May 2027, a news release said.
The project comes as the airport continues to post record-setting numbers. In June, more than 34,000 passengers traveled through Gulf Shores International Airport, marking the busiest month since airline service launched in May 2025.
Airport officials also reported that service across 13 destinations averaged a 78% load factor during June. Load factor is an aviation industry measurement that compares the number of passengers on a flight with the aircraft’s seating capacity.
The expansion received a boost earlier this spring when the airport was awarded a $2 million Federal Aviation Administration Airport Terminal Program grant funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The FAA program prioritizes airport projects that enhance the passenger experience.
Plans for the upgraded terminal include a relaxed outdoor patio, a dedicated mothers’ nursing area and expanded food, beverage and retail options for travelers.
Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh said in the release the airport has worked closely with Allegiant throughout the planning process and remains committed to preserving its community-focused atmosphere even as it grows.
“We have been in lockstep with Allegiant throughout this process. Measured growth allows for greater route scheduling opportunities, increased space for our passengers, and more supporting infrastructure. Even though we are growing, we will keep the airport experience quick, easy, inexpensive, and cheerful. The ‘small-community’ feel of the airport is still paramount to our mission.”
Construction will continue throughout the terminal area and nearby parking facilities as work progresses toward the planned summer 2027 opening.
Fosnaugh acknowledged that construction activity may create temporary inconveniences for airport operations and travelers.
“We understand that growth doesn’t happen without some operational challenges, especially while you are required to run your airport at the same time as construction and renovation is occurring. We appreciate the public’s patience as we go through this growth and construction with the end goal of serving them better.”
