Gulf Shores hosts junior tennis tournament

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The City of Gulf Shores hosted the 2nd annual USTA-sanctioned Spring Break Junior Tennis Tournament last week.

The Girl’s 10’s, 12’s and 16’s were round robin events. The 10 and Under events are held on a modified tennis court with low compression tennis balls, a shortened version of the regular scoring and the scoring help of volunteers Johanna Phillips, Deanna Cornett and Linda Stanfield, all members of the Gulf Shores Ladies Tennis League. The winner of the Girls 10 event was Annalisa Smith of Pensacola, who defeated Bonnie Johnson of Orange Beach 4-2, 4-0.

Blaeke Mitchell defeated her younger sister Reagan Mitchell, both of Orange Beach 6-1, 6-2 to take the Girl’s 12 and under title.

The winner of the Girl’s 16’s was Megan Larsen who defeated Anna Lazenby both of Opelika by the scores, 6-0, 7-6. The second seed, Michaela Robinson of Auburn took the Girl’s 18’s title by defeating Melanie Lewis of Pensacola 6-3, 7-6, and Elizabeth Schmidt of Daphne won the consolation in the Girl’s 18’s by defeating Britni Thibodeau of Pace Fla., 6-4, 6-2.

In the Boy’s 10 and under division, top seed Michael Eddins of Pensacola defeated Jake Lartigue of Orange Beach 4-0, 4-3, and the consolation winner of this division was Elliott Johnson who defeated Jay Jackson, both of Orange Beach 4-0, 4-3.

The number one seed in the Boy’s 12 division, George Green of Mobile held up to his seeding by defeating Kevin Lazenby of Opelika 6-3, 6-4. The winner of the Boy’s 12 consolation was Gordon Smith of Pensacola who defeated Dakotah Bobo of Gulf Shores 6-0,6-1.

The number one seed in the Boy’s 16’s, Nicholas Cruz of Foley captured first place by defeating Jake Jerome of Auburn 7-5,4-6,12-10. And the consolation winner in this event was Barry Booth of Spanish Fort who defeated David McDonald of Gulf Shores 6-3,6-3.

Steven Ramsey of Mobile the number one seed in the Boy’s 18’s, captured the championship by defeating William McCelland of Elberta 6-2, 6-2. Robert Hays of Auburn AL, captured the 18’s consolation final by defeating Spencer Nunn of Mobile 6-0,6-0.
