GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Gulf Shores Dolphins stopped Bayside Academy on a two-point conversion attempt with 29 seconds left in the game to hold on for a 35-34 Homecoming win.
Gulf Shores finished the season with a 4-6 record in 5A play, while Bayside (7-3) will play at Abbeville in the first round of the 3A playoffs next Friday.
"A win at this stage is good for us," Gulf Shores coach Mark Freeman said. "That win, down the road, will go a long way for us. It came down to three yards and we were fortunate enough to win that particular play."
Jonathan Walton's 4-yard touchdown set up the two-point try, which Bayside coach said was his decision.
"That was my call," Lazenby said. "On the road, against a 5A school, I thought 'their offense is really good so we are going to try to win it right here.' We almost got it done, just not quite. But that was my call."
Lazenby said he was pleased with the way his offense played in the loss.
"They were clicking. They played hard and played well. We were a bit undermanned and undersized, but they played hard and I am very proud of them."
Walton also returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter. Ryan Owens had a 50-yard touchdown run and an 82-yard kickoff return for a score. Scooter Blake added a rushing touchdown for Bayside.
For Gulf Shores, quarterback Brandon Silvers completed 20-of-24 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Josh Carroll had two rushing touchdowns, including one for 65 yards.
