The Gulf Shores Dolphins claimed their first boys’ soccer state championship 3-2 over Guntersville in double overtime Friday morning in Huntsville.
It was none other than the program’s all-time leading scorer, Southern Union signee Talan Galvan, who delivered the game-winning goal nearly three minutes into the second overtime period of the Class 5A championship match.
Despite facing a 2-0 halftime deficit, Gulf Shores forced overtime with a goal each from Galvan and fellow senior Noah Guthrie, who opened the scoring early in the second half. They led the way in the shot department as Galvan (7) and Guthrie (3) helped the Dolphins rack up 17 shots compared to the Wildcats’ four.
Gulf Shores survived a weather delay in the semifinals to earn their return trip back to the finals.
Play between the Dolphins and Tallassee Tigers was suspended with 27:42 remaining in a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening thanks to an equalizing goal from sophomore Nathan Duhel 30 seconds after Tallassee's first goal. Once play resumed the following day, senior Matheus Siqueira, a Millsaps basketball signee, recorded the go-ahead goal just three minutes into Thursday morning’s action before freshman goalkeeper Taylor Barkley finished the job in net.
With the Blue Map celebration, Gulf Shores — head coached by Danny Norton — finished the 2024 season with a 21-7-2 overall record.
