Gulf Shores Couch to 5K program returns for fourth year

GULF SHORES, AL – The City of Gulf Shores is gearing up for the fourth annual Couch to 5K Training Series.

It’s an eight-week program geared for absolute beginners and designed to get you physically active and 5K ready. Training is Feb. 1 through March 24 and classes are every Monday and Thursday night from 6 p.m.–7 p.m. with the Flora-Bama’s Beach Run/Walk for America’s Warriors 5K as the target race on March 26.

Training is led by Holly Cade, Customer Service Representative and ACE certified personal trainer at the Bodenhamer Center.

"The program starts by combining jogging intervals with walking and gradually builds up,” Cade said.

Cade also provides nutritional tips and recipes for the group.

“If you are struggling to stick to an exercise routine this class will offer you motivation and accountability,” said Cade. She further explained “even if you are unable to run the entire time you will improve your cardiorespiratory health through raising your heart rate during the class, gain self-confidence through the completion of the program, meet new people and learn new recipes which will help you eat a more balanced diet.”

Nancy Webb, Bodenhamer Center member, was a bit apprehensive about starting the last class.

"Starting the Couch to 5K seemed intimidating, but the program starts you off nice, easy and slow,” said Webb. “It makes you feel like you can do this and by the end you are running/jogging a 5K.”

Since starting the Couch to 5K program Webb has ran several 5Ks, a 10K and most recently completed a sprint triathlon. “I am happy to say that I am the healthiest I have been in my entire life,” said Webb. “Starting the Couch to 5K has changed my life for the best and I would do it all over again!”

The Couch to 5K costs $85 and covers the class fee and race entry. A full Bodenhamer member, 12-month member to fitness and aquatics, cost is $75. All race participants will receive a goody bag and free entry in the Zydeco & Crawfish Festival 5K on April 16.

Pre-register at the Bodenhamer Center now and receive a $10 early registration discount through January 1. For additional information about the various programs and events at the Bodenhamer Center please contact Nicole Ard, Recreation Manager, at 251-968-1424 or visit www.gulfshoresal.gov.
