GULF SHORES, Ala. — The sun is shining, the air is warm and the Gulf Shores Outdoors and In series has started its 19th season.
From April to October residents and visitors alike are welcome to partake in a Pleasure Island tradition of free and fabulous entertainment.
Named Outdoors and In, the concerts are usually planned for the lawn of the Erie Meyer Civic Center. But rain or shine, the show will go on as the concert is moved inside for temperamental weather.
“We have entertainers in a venue where people can bring their families,” special events coordinator Teri Westbrook said. “It’s a good time for families and for all ages.”
Concerts are held on Thursday nights at 7 p.m., and special events director Patsy Hollingsworth said people are encouraged to bring blankets, picnics and even lawn chairs to the outdoor events.
However, with the heat of June, July and August, the concerts are moved indoors because Westbrook said “it’s muggy and buggy.”
Those featured in the series this year are local musician Brent Burns, Elvis tribute artist Shane Tucker and the Pensacola Civic Band.
Tucker, a local favorite who makes appearances regularly, has drawn a crowd of 450 people at a previous Outdoors and In show.
Former Foley High School Band director and trombonist Don Snowden will perform with the Pensacola Civic Band and the Perdido Brass.
“We try and have music that’s across the board as far as genres go,” Westbrook said. “Some of the other communities bring buses to come. You can’t beat the price and it’s always entertaining.”
Tomorrow night, local family band The Helton’s will perform a variety of country, gospel and pop music. Three generations — a father, daughter and granddaughter — will present a lively show that’s always well received.
On Sept. 10 The Helton’s will return to the stage to take part in a special evening when Gulf Shores opens a time capsule sealed in the 1970s. The opening will honor the Baldwin County’s Bicentennial.
“We have no idea what’s in (the time capsule),” Hollingsworth said.
Concert dates and entertainers can be found on the Gulf Shores city Web site, cityofgulfshores.org.
