Gulf Shores City Council approves $408,000 decorative lighting package for new Pedestrian Bridge

GULF SHORES — The new Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge under construction to cross the Intracoastal Waterway will now include decorative lighting, according to a project budget amendment.

Gulf Shores City Council approved a request by the city at a meeting Monday, June 22, to add the lighting package. The proposal comes from Harrison Construction Co., the contract company tasked with the construction of the pedestrian bridge, for $408,940, for the design, furnishing and material and equipment.

The bridge lighting will consist of 50 light fixtures along the bridge and towers; 12 on each of the towers and 13 fixtures on each side of the bridge. The lights will have remote-access to control the system, which will be pre-programmed with up to 30 color combinations for circumstances such as holidays or events.

In a June 19 update, the city posted on its website that "tower exterior wall panels will begin going up in July, paving the way for the main bridge superstructure assembly to start in early August.” A superstructure is the structure above the ground such as foundation like frames, columns or walls.

The lighting package will not change the completion date for the bridge, which is Jan. 14, 2027
