Gulf Shores church sets benefit for school hit by tornado

The Sandspur Band of Gulf Shores United Methodist Church will perform a benefit concert Sunday, July 17th at 7:00 pm in the South Campus Auditorium located in the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center. The Sandspur Band will be performing a concert of bluegrass gospel music. Admission is FREE; however, a collection will be taken for the Cullman Christian School (CCS) destroyed by tornado.

The private school’s elementary campus was flattened by the EF4 tornado that ripped through downtown Cullman on April 27, 2011. School officials temporarily relocated the elementary classrooms and volunteers from Kentucky helped move equipment into storage and secondary sites. Additionally, salvaged items were moved to the school’s middle and high school campus which was undamaged.

In 2007, CCS began as an independent, non-denominational school established to serve the Christian community by providing an excellent education with the freedom to promote a biblical worldview. In 2010 and because of rapid growth, the school split the middle/high school to a secondary location and raised funds to purchase 39 acres in the city of Cullman for its future campus.

At present, CCS’s biggest need for this school of 115 students is financial. They need to begin site work, utilities, and buildings on the new 39-acre campus as soon as possible. Originally, the school was scheduled for 2012; however, this timeframe has been moved up by a year because of the tornado. For more information related to the school, visit their website at www.cullmanchristian.org.

The public is welcomed at GSUMC. If you are unable to attend the concert and would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to GSUMC, indicate “Tornado Relief” on your remittance, and mail it as follows: GSUMC, P.O.Box 374, Gulf Shores, AL 36547.
