The City of Gulf Shores is gearing up for a 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the area surrounding the Erie Meyer Civic Center, Bodenhamer Center and the Adult Activity Center.

Gulf Shores celebrates 50 years

The City of Gulf Shores is gearing up for a 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the area surrounding the Erie Meyer Civic Center, Bodenhamer Center and the Adult Activity Center.

SCHEDULE:

10-10:15 a.m.: Welcome by Mayor George W. "Billy" Duke III; antique car show awards; entertainment by Cammie Maumenee's Dance Studio dancing to with a 50’s theme at the Erie Meyer Civic Center.

During the day, the Adult Activity Center will feature classic movies from 1957 and will serve as a place for event-goers to rest weary feet, while the Erie Meyer Civic Center will host exhibits depicting 1950s clothing, ads, photos, prints and more, as well as furniture and equipment from that era. The Civic Center will also feature entertainment, music, dance and a soda fountain as well as an art exhibit titled, "Life in 1957 and Today" created by Gulf Shores High School and Middle School students.

Those attending will have the opportunity to have their photo taken at the front portico of the Civic Center for inclusion in a time capsule that will be sealed until 2057.

Hourly prize drawings are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prizes will include 50th Anniversary logo hats and flags, visors, yo-yos, Frisbees, 1957 silver certificate dollars and more.

Carnival games, a climbing wall, slide and inflatables, including a moonwalk, will be set up in and around "Carnival Park," which is near the Erie Meyer Civic Center and Bodenhamer Center.

11 a.m.: The competition is on between the Gulf Shores police and fire departments in a softball game at Sims Park.

11-11:30 a.m.: Pensacola Sound Chorus and Sweet Adelines will perform at the Erie Meyer Civic Center.

12:30-1 p.m.: "A Blast from the Past," by Dance Works at the Erie Meyer Civic Center.

2:15-3 p.m.: "Elvis Remembered," by Shane Tucker, at the Erie Meyer Civic Center.

2:30 to 3 p.m.: "A Blast From the Past," by Dance Works, along closed portions of West 19th Avenue in front of the Bodenhamer Center.

Contests will be held on West 19th Avenue, which will be closed to traffic for the day, in front of the Bodenhamer Center.

10:30 a.m.: Pogo stick races for boys and girls. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, & 11 & above with a weight limit of 160 pounds.

11 a.m.: Races with stilts. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10 & 11 & above with a weight limit of 160 pounds.

11:30 a.m.: Frisbee throw for boys and girls. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & above.

1 p.m.: Yo-yo competition. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & above.

1:30 p.m.: Hula hoop competition. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & above.

2p.m.: Paddleball championship. Age groups are 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & above.
