Gulf Shores International Airport is moving forward with a $15 million terminal expansion after bids opened earlier this week, marking a major step in its effort to keep pace with rapid passenger growth.
The bid opening took place May 4, with the project now positioned to move toward construction later this summer. Plans call for a connected terminal expansion that will add boarding gate areas, expand curbside drop-off space, increase baggage claim capacity and introduce a new outdoor patio aimed at improving passenger flow and comfort, a news release said.
Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft said the expansion reflects continued demand for air service in Coastal Alabama.
"We've seen remarkable demand since the start of airline service in May of last year and this project is about keeping pace with that growth in a responsible way," Craft said.
Airport officials are also preparing for what they expect to be the busiest summer travel season since commercial service began in 2025. By late May, Gulf Shores International Airport will offer 30 total flights per week as new nonstop routes come online and existing service increases.
"We know this summer will be quite busy and at times congested with all of the new destinations and frequency of flights." Airport Director Jesse Fosnaugh said in the release. "We have implemented several new elements within the terminal to create a positive experience for our customers. We are being proactive and appreciate everyone's patience as we work through challenges and improve our facility's comfort and capabilities."
To handle increased demand, the airport has adjusted pickup and drop-off zones, expanded parking capacity and enhanced its outdoor prescreening area. Seasonal amenities will also include live music from local musician Just Roger and food truck service from Trauma Hogs. Volunteers from the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber will assist travelers throughout the terminal.
"Our Ambassador volunteers are proud to offer a warm coastal welcome," said Greg Alexander, CEO of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber. "Sometimes travelers just need a friendly face or a quick answer, and we're glad to provide that support for the airport."
Allegiant Air, the only commercial carrier serving Gulf Shores International Airport, also announced this week a special offer aimed at assisting travelers affected by the sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines following a failed federal bailout. The airline said it will also temporarily hold fares steady across routes that overlap with Spirit service to help accommodate rebooked passengers. New Allegiant service launching in May will further increase traffic. Inaugural flights include Omaha, Nebraska beginning May 21 and Huntsville beginning May 21. Additional routes beginning May 22 include service to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Louisville, Kentucky and Springfield, Missouri.
Each inaugural flight will be marked with water cannon salutes from the Gulf Shores Fire Department, along with welcome activities coordinated by Alabama's Beaches and the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber.
