Great Alabama 650 paddle race set for October

Posted

Thirty-two paddlers from around the world will converge on Alabama in October for the eighth annual Great Alabama 650, the longest paddle race in the United States.

The 650-mile ultra-endurance race begins Oct. 3 at Weiss Lake in Northeast Alabama and will take competitors through a challenging course featuring whitewater, tidewater currents and approximately nine dams. Racers will have up to 10 days to complete the course, which follows the core section of the Alabama Scenic River Trail from Weiss Lake through the Coosa River and Alabama River to Mobile Bay and Fort Morgan.

The race will feature three divisions: male solo, female solo and two-person team. Competitors can switch between kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards throughout the race.

Spectators will have opportunities to watch the race from riverbanks in communities including Gadsden, Pell City, Wetumpka, Montgomery, Selma and Fairhope.

The Alabama Scenic River Trail serves as the host of the Great Alabama 650. The trail stretches from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Northeast Alabama through the state to Mobile Bay and the Gulf. Organizers say the race helps highlight the state's waterways while promoting appreciation for Alabama's outdoor recreation opportunities.

Those unable to watch the race in person can follow the competitors' progress online at www.AL650.com, where a live map will provide updates throughout the race.

ASRT race staff also will share live race information through the official Great Alabama 650 Facebook and Instagram accounts, @GreatAlabama650, and through #AL650.

The Alabama Scenic River Trail is the state's official paddling resource and works with communities, local organizations, members and outfitters to promote recreation, economic vitality and stewardship of Alabama's waterways.

The organization provides access to more than 6,300 miles of paddling trails across Alabama and works to create safe, welcoming experiences for paddlers of all skill levels while connecting them with the state's diverse waterways.
